Location SEO for businesses serving multiple areas

If you serve customers across several towns or cities, you need a deliberate plan for how each area is represented on your website. Done right, location pages help you rank locally. Done wrong, they look like spam.

The location page problem

The easy way to target many cities is to copy one page twenty times and change the city name. Google's spam policies call these doorway pages: pages created to rank for similar searches that lead users to essentially the same content. They can be ignored or harm how your site is assessed.

Location SEO is about representing each area genuinely, so every location page earns its place.

When a location page is justified

Create a dedicated location page when you can offer content that is genuinely specific to that area, such as:

  • A physical branch, office or team in that location
  • Different services, pricing or availability there
  • Real local projects, clients or case studies
  • Local information customers need: travel, coverage, timings, landmarks
  • Local questions and answers that differ from other areas

If you cannot write something meaningfully different, it is usually better to list the area on your main service page than to create a thin page.

What a good location page includes

  • A clear H1 and title naming the area and your main service
  • How you serve that area: branch, visits, delivery or remote
  • Local proof: projects, reviews and photos from that area
  • Services available there, linked to full service pages
  • Local FAQs
  • Nearby areas covered, linked where pages exist
  • Consistent contact details and, for real branches, a map and LocalBusiness schema

Structuring locations on your site

We usually organise location pages under a single folder, such as /locations/jhansi/, linked from a locations hub grouped by region. Service pages link to the locations they are offered in, and location pages link back. This is the structure used on this website, and our article on local SEO for multiple cities explains the approach.

Service + location combinations

Pages for every service in every city (for example, "SEO in Jhansi", "Web design in Jhansi", "SEO in Gwalior"...) multiply quickly into hundreds of thin pages. We only create a service-location page when there is real search demand and genuinely distinct content for that combination.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many location pages should I create?

As many as you can make genuinely useful and distinct — not one per city by default. Quality over quantity.

Can I use the same content on location pages with the city name changed?

No. Near-identical pages are treated as doorway pages under Google's spam policies. Each page should offer meaningfully different, useful information.
