What is SEO?

Quick answer

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the practice of improving a website so that it appears more prominently in a search engine's unpaid results for relevant searches. It combines technical improvements, useful content and trust signals so that search engines can find your pages, understand them and decide they are a good answer.

Unlike ads, you do not pay per click. Unlike social posts, a well-ranked page can bring visitors for months or years. But SEO takes time and there are no shortcuts that last. Anyone who guarantees "first page in 30 days" is either targeting searches no one makes or using tactics that risk penalties.

How search engines work

Search engines do three main jobs: they crawl the web to discover pages, index those pages to understand and store them, and rank indexed pages when someone searches. SEO helps at every stage. Our article on how Google understands a business website explains this in plain language.

Crawling

Crawling is discovery. Search engine bots follow links and read sitemaps to find new and updated pages. If a page has no internal links pointing to it, is blocked by robots.txt or sits behind broken redirects, it may never be found. We make sure your important pages are linked, listed in an XML sitemap and free of crawl obstacles.

Indexing

Indexing is understanding and storing. After crawling a page, the search engine analyses its content, headings, images, structured data and canonical signals, then decides whether to add it to the index. Pages can be excluded for being duplicates, too thin, marked noindex or technically broken. Google Search Console shows exactly which pages are indexed and why others are not.

Ranking

Ranking is the order in which indexed pages are shown for a query. Search engines weigh hundreds of signals, but the big themes are consistent: relevance to the query, quality and helpfulness of the content, the page's experience (speed, mobile usability, security) and signals of authority and trust, such as links and mentions from other reputable sites.

Search intent

Search intent is the reason behind a search. Someone typing "what is local SEO" wants an explanation. Someone typing "SEO agency in Jhansi" wants to compare providers. Someone typing "VISIBLIX contact" wants a phone number. Matching the right page type to the right intent is one of the most important — and most often ignored — parts of SEO. We map every target keyword to an intent before deciding what page should rank for it. See our guide to search intent.

Keyword research

Keyword research finds the actual phrases your customers use, how often they search them, how competitive they are and what the current results look like. For local businesses this often reveals phrases you would never guess, such as Hinglish variations, landmark-based searches or very specific service names. We group keywords into topics and assign each group to a single page, which prevents your own pages from competing with each other.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO covers everything that affects how search engines access and process your site: crawlability, indexation, site speed and Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, HTTPS, redirects, canonical tags, structured data, XML sitemaps and site architecture. Technical problems are often invisible to the business owner but can quietly cap everything else.

On-page SEO

On-page SEO is the optimisation of individual pages: the title tag, meta description, H1 and subheadings, body content, images and alt text, internal links and on-page structured data. The aim is a page that clearly answers the search it targets and makes its topic obvious to both readers and search engines.

Content

Content is what search engines rank. For most businesses that means three types of page:

  • Service pages that explain each service thoroughly. See service page SEO.
  • Location pages for genuinely distinct areas you serve. See location SEO.
  • Helpful guides and FAQs that answer the questions customers ask before buying.

Our content writing team writes for people first and structures for search engines second.

Internal linking

Internal links connect your pages. They help search engines discover content, understand which pages are most important and see how topics relate. They also guide visitors to the next useful page. We plan internal links deliberately, with descriptive anchor text, rather than leaving them to chance. Read how internal linking helps SEO.

Local SEO

If you serve customers in specific towns or cities, local SEO is often where the fastest gains are. It combines your Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews and location-relevant content. We offer it both as part of SEO and as a dedicated local SEO service.

Authority

Authority is the trust a site earns over time — largely through links and mentions from other reputable websites, but also through consistent business information and genuine reviews. We build authority through legitimate means: local partnerships, industry directories, PR-worthy content and relationships. We do not buy links or use private link networks, because those risk penalties that can wipe out years of work.

Measurement

We measure SEO with data from your own accounts: Google Search Console for impressions, clicks, queries and indexing; Google Analytics for engagement and conversions; and call or form tracking for leads. Rankings are tracked for priority keywords, but they are reported alongside the numbers that affect revenue. Our guide to measuring organic search and AI visibility explains how.

Our SEO process

SEO works best as a steady, prioritised programme rather than a one-off fix. The process below repeats in cycles: we fix, publish, measure and refine.

Common SEO mistakes

  • Targeting only very broad keywords and ignoring specific, high-intent ones
  • One page trying to rank for every service
  • Copying the same location page for twenty cities and swapping the name
  • Ignoring Google Search Console warnings for months
  • Buying cheap backlinks
  • Measuring success only by rankings, not by enquiries

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work?

Most businesses start seeing meaningful movement in three to six months, with stronger results building over six to twelve months. Highly competitive industries and brand-new websites take longer. Technical fixes can show effects sooner.

Can you guarantee first-page rankings?

No. Google controls its rankings, and they change constantly. Any agency guaranteeing a specific position is either targeting low-value keywords or taking risks with your site. We commit to a clear process and transparent reporting instead.

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

Google Ads places paid listings at the top of results and stops when you stop paying. SEO earns unpaid organic listings that keep bringing traffic but take longer to build. Many businesses use both. See performance marketing.

Do I need SEO if I already have a Google Business Profile?

Your Business Profile helps you appear in the map results. SEO helps your website rank in the organic results and supports your profile's prominence. They work best together.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO improves rankings in organic results; AEO structures content so search features can lift direct answers; GEO helps AI assistants understand and accurately describe your brand. All three rely on the same foundation of clear, trustworthy content.

How do you report on SEO?

Monthly reports in plain language covering what we did, changes in impressions, clicks and rankings for priority topics, and leads or conversions where tracking is set up — plus the plan for the next month.
