What is website design?

Website design is the planning of how a website looks, feels and guides people. It covers layout, typography, colour, imagery and the way information is arranged on each page. Good design is not decoration. Its job is to help a visitor understand, within a few seconds, who you are, what you offer and what to do next.

For a business website, design decisions are commercial decisions. Where the phone number sits, how services are grouped, whether trust signals such as reviews and credentials are visible — these choices shape how many visitors become enquiries.

What is website development?

Website development is the technical work that turns a design into a working website. It includes building templates, setting up the content management system, making pages responsive across devices, connecting forms and tracking, optimising speed, securing the site and configuring hosting.

Design and development should not be separate projects handed between strangers. When the same team plans both, the result is a site that looks right and performs well — fast, accessible, and structured in a way search engines can read.

Business websites

A business website has a different job from a portfolio or a hobby blog. It needs to:

  • Explain your services clearly to people who are comparing options
  • Show proof that you are real and trustworthy: address, photos, credentials, reviews
  • Rank for the searches your customers make
  • Make contacting you effortless, especially on a phone

We plan every business website around those four jobs, starting with your services and the questions customers ask before buying.

WordPress websites

Most of our builds use WordPress, the most widely used content management system on the web. It is flexible, well supported and easy to hand over. We typically pair it with a lightweight theme and the free version of Elementor, so you can edit pages visually without depending on paid plugins for basic changes. SEO-friendly websites

An SEO-friendly website is one that search engines can crawl, understand and trust, and that gives each important topic its own focused page. That means a logical URL structure, one clear H1 per page, descriptive titles and meta descriptions, internal links between related pages, fast loading, mobile usability and structured data where it helps.

These are much cheaper to build in from the start than to fix later. Our SEO-friendly website approach is explained in detail on its own page.

Mobile responsive design

For most local businesses, the majority of visitors arrive on a phone. A responsive website adapts its layout to every screen size. But responsive is the minimum. Mobile-first design goes further: thumb-friendly buttons, readable text without zooming, short forms, tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons, and images that do not slow the page on a patchy connection.

Website structure

Structure is the part of a website most people never notice and search engines care about most. A good structure:

  • Gives each service, location and important topic its own page
  • Groups related pages logically (for example, all SEO services under /seo/)
  • Links pages to each other with descriptive anchor text
  • Keeps important pages within a few clicks of the homepage

This is the same principle behind the structure of this website. Our guide to internal linking for large business websites goes deeper.

User experience (UX)

User experience is how easy and pleasant it is to use your website. Can visitors find what they are looking for? Do pages answer their questions in a sensible order? Is the next step obvious? We test key journeys — a patient booking an appointment, a buyer requesting a site visit, a customer asking for a quote — and remove friction wherever we find it.

Conversion-focused design

Conversion-focused design means designing for a specific action. Every important page should have one primary goal, such as a call, a form submission or a WhatsApp message, and the layout should support it. We use clear headlines, benefit-led copy, visible contact options, trust signals near the call to action, and forms that ask only for what you need.

Website performance

Speed affects both rankings and conversions. Google measures real-user experience through Core Web Vitals, and visitors abandon slow pages. We optimise images, load fonts efficiently, avoid heavy plugins, lazy-load below-the-fold media and choose hosting that suits your traffic.

Website maintenance

A website is never "finished". Plugins need updates, content needs refreshing, backups need to run and security needs watching. We offer ongoing maintenance so your site stays fast, secure and current, and so small issues are caught before they become outages.

Website redesign

If your current site is outdated, slow or hard to edit, a website redesign can help. The biggest risk in a redesign is losing existing search visibility. We protect it by auditing current rankings and traffic, keeping or redirecting URLs properly, and preserving content that already performs.

Landing pages

A landing page is a focused page built for one campaign or one offer, usually for paid ads or a specific lead-generation push. It removes distractions and leads to one action. See landing page design for how we build them.

How the website and SEO work together

Your website and your SEO are not two separate projects. The website is the asset SEO improves; SEO decides which pages the website needs. When they are planned together, you avoid the common pattern of building a beautiful site and then discovering it has no pages for the services people actually search for. That is why every VISIBLIX website starts with keyword and competitor research, and why our SEO services can begin on the day a site launches.

How we build your website

Our process keeps you involved at the points that matter and avoids surprises at launch. You will see a sitemap and wireframes before design, a design before development, and a staging site before anything goes live.

Common website mistakes we fix

  • No page for each service. One "Services" page listing everything cannot rank for each service.
  • Slow, heavy pages. Uncompressed images, sliders and too many plugins.
  • Hidden contact details. Phone number only in the footer, no WhatsApp option.
  • Missing basics. Duplicate titles, no meta descriptions, multiple H1s, no sitemap.
  • Locked-in builds. Sites the owner cannot edit or move to another provider.
  • Launching without tracking. No Search Console, no analytics, no conversion tracking.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a business website?

A typical small-business website takes roughly three to six weeks from approved plan to launch, depending on the number of pages, how quickly content and feedback are available and any custom features. Larger sites take longer. We give you a timeline in the proposal.

How much does a website cost?

Cost depends on the number of pages, custom design work, content writing and features such as booking or multilingual support. [REPLACE PRICING GUIDANCE] We provide a fixed written quote after the discovery call.

Will I be able to edit the website myself?

Yes. We build on WordPress with Elementor (free) so you can edit text, images and pages visually. We also provide a short training session.

Do you build websites that are SEO-friendly?

Yes. Every site includes clean URLs, unique titles and descriptions, a logical heading structure, internal linking, an XML sitemap, schema basics, mobile responsiveness and speed optimisation.

Can you redesign my existing website without losing rankings?

We plan redesigns to protect existing visibility: we audit current rankings and traffic, keep or properly redirect URLs, and preserve content that performs. No redesign is risk-free, but careful migration keeps the risk low.

Who owns the website?

You do. The domain, hosting account and website are registered in your name.
