Showing up in “near me” searches

“Near me” searches are some of the highest-intent searches a local business can appear for. Here is how they work — and what actually helps you show up.

Quick answer

A "near me" search is a query such as "dentist near me" or "AC repair near me" where the user wants a nearby provider. Search engines use the device's location (when available) to show nearby businesses — mainly through Google Maps and the local pack — ranked by relevance, distance and prominence.

Many people do not even type "near me" any more. Google often treats a search like "pharmacy" as local intent automatically.

Why you cannot "optimise for near me" by adding the words

Adding "near me" to your page titles or business name does not help — and adding it to your business name breaks Google's guidelines. Google works out location from the searcher's device, not from those words on your page.

What actually helps

  • Relevance: the right primary category, complete services and a website that clearly describes what you do
  • Distance: an accurate address or service area; you cannot change where the searcher stands
  • Prominence: reviews, consistent listings, local links and an overall strong web presence
  • Being open: accurate hours — "open now" searches filter out closed businesses
  • Conversion readiness: call, directions and WhatsApp options that work instantly

The website's role

Your website confirms your profile's information, gives Google more context about your services and area, and converts visitors who want more detail before calling. See local SEO.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I add "near me" to my website pages?

Not as a tactic. Write naturally about your services and the areas you serve; Google handles location matching itself.

Why do I appear in "near me" results at my shop but not across town?

Distance from the searcher is a major factor. Visibility usually drops as the searcher moves further away, especially in competitive categories.
