Quick answer
A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business, often called GMB) is a free listing that controls how your business appears in Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, location or service area, hours, phone number, website, photos, reviews and more, and is the main source for the map results shown in local searches.
For local searches, the Business Profile often is the search result. People can call you, get directions, read reviews, see photos and visit your website without scrolling to the regular results. An incomplete or inaccurate profile loses those customers silently — they simply choose a competitor whose listing looks more trustworthy.
Optimisation means making every part of the profile accurate, complete and relevant. That includes the business name (exactly as it appears in the real world, without added keywords), address or service area, phone number, website link, hours including special hours, attributes, categories, services, products and description. It also means verifying the profile and protecting it from unwanted edits.
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals for which searches your profile appears in. Choosing "Dental Clinic" versus "Dentist", or "Real Estate Developer" versus "Real Estate Agency", changes what you are eligible to show for. We research the categories your top competitors use and select the most accurate ones for your business.
The services section lets you list what you offer, with descriptions. Clear, specific services help Google match your profile to relevant searches and help customers understand what you do. We align this list with the service pages on your website.
Your description should explain what you do, who you serve and what makes you different, in natural language. It should not be stuffed with keywords or include links or promotional claims that violate Google's guidelines.
Profiles with real, recent photos tend to look more trustworthy and get more engagement. We advise on what to photograph — exterior (so people can recognise you), interior, team, work samples and products — and help you keep adding photos over time.
Posts let you share updates, offers, events and new services directly on your profile. They keep the profile active and give customers more reasons to engage. We plan a simple posting rhythm you can sustain.
Reviews are both a ranking factor and a deciding factor. We set up a direct review link, train your team on when and how to ask, and draft professional responses — especially to negative reviews, where a calm, helpful reply often matters more to future customers than the review itself.
Beyond the profile itself, Google looks at signals elsewhere: your website's content about your services and area, mentions in local directories and media, and consistency of your business information. This is where your profile and local SEO overlap. Our Google Business Profile SEO page goes deeper into the ranking side.
Your profile is your presence on Google Maps. Accurate pin placement, correct address formatting, opening hours and photos of the entrance all help customers actually reach you — which matters as much as being found.
A strong profile and strong local SEO amplify each other. The website confirms what the profile says; the profile sends visitors to the website; reviews build prominence for both. That is why we usually run profile management as part of a wider local visibility plan.
The Business Profile Performance report shows how people find and interact with you: searches that triggered your profile, views on Search and Maps, calls, direction requests, website clicks and messages. We report these monthly, alongside review growth and any changes we made.

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile. Many people still call it GMB.
It depends on the verification method Google offers, which may include phone, email, video or postcard. Some verifications are quick; others take longer if Google needs more evidence.
No. Map rankings depend on relevance, distance from the searcher and prominence, and Google does not let anyone pay for organic map placement. We improve the factors you can influence and report honestly on progress.
You should not. Google's guidelines require your real-world business name. Keyword-stuffed names can lead to suspension.
